Heating Scheuermatthof Holiday Home

This manual describes heating with wood in Scheuermatthof holiday house (ground floor, upper floor and barn) and the operation of the electric night storage heater.

The house can be heated with wood-burning stoves. On the ground floor (kitchen) there are two historical stoves with draughts to the upper floor. A modern fireplace is installed in the barn.

The rooms Freiburg, Hirschsprung and the barn are additionally equipped with night storage heaters (electricity). Note that the night storage heaters must be charged overnight in order to dissipate heat the next day. The Operation of the night storage heater is described below.

Heating with electricity can incur high costs of up to 60 €/day. Firewood for the stoves and the fireplace is provided free of charge.

Heating the holiday house Scheuermatthof with wood

Attention

  • NEVER add more than three or four large logs or even fill the entire combustion chamber with wood. This leads to overheating and thus to damage of the furnace.
  • Do not under any circumstances pour fire accelerators such as alcohol, petrol or similar into the oven => DANGER OF LIFE
  • Burn only untreated and dry wood
  • Use only newspaper or stove lighter for lighting

Coating and firing

  • Tear down the newspaper: Take a folded newspaper/cardboard and tear it in the direction of the fibres approx. every 1 cm as far as possible. Now open the newspaper and loosely crumple the individual pages together. Tearing is important to ensure that the paper gets enough air, burns completely and produces a good heat.
  • Prepare light source: Put the crumpled paper/cardboard in the middle of the firebox and put small pieces of wood over it (split small parts, plywood, boxed wood).

wood as a "fireplace"
  • Build "lighting-up fireplace": Take now two logs and place them on the right and left side (approx. 10 cm apart) next to the crumpled newspapers/heap of fire. On it by 90 degrees again two parallel logs,... Build such a "fireplace" from logs with 3 layers in the middle of which lie the crumpled newspapers and the small firewood.
  • NEVER add more than three or four large logs or even fill the entire combustion chamber with wood. This leads to overheating and thus to damage of the furnace.

Oven settings

The basic ovens at the dishwasher and between the stoves:

  • To ensure that the stove ignites well and no smoke is drawn into the living area when lighting, a good trigger is required.
  • Open the supply air flaps at the upper furnace door and at the lower ash box door.
  • You can also leave the lower door to the ash box slightly open when lightening.

heating fireplace in the barn:

  • To ensure that the stove ignites well and no smoke is drawn into the living area when lighting, a good trigger is required. For this purpose, the throttle damper is opened and the supply air dampers are opened.
  • The supply air lever is located at the bottom left of the furnace (press = closed, drawn =  many supply air)
  • The lever/lever for the fume cupboard is located at the bottom right of the oven (pressed = closed, pulled = open)

Creating fire

  • Ignite the newsprint paper/cardboard and close the oven door.
  • Meistens you have to put some paper/paper/firewood in between the logs during the lighting-up phase.
  • WARNING: The oven door/upper oven door must always be kept completely closed. Otherwise, unhealthy flue gases are drawn into the living space and the fire alarm is triggered (see "Hazard alarm system" manual). EXCEPTION: lower door to ash box at the basic furnaces
  • .

When the fire burns

  • After 10-20 minutes, the heat in the firebox has slowly ignited all the wood. In the oven, embers slowly build up. If not read on in the next section.
  • So that the glow and other wood do not burn off so quickly, it is now possible to reduce the supply air. If the stove should burn for as long as possible, e. g. close the air supply over night.
  • It is best to leave the trigger open at all times. If the stove draws too much, possibly close a little, but NEVER close the exhaust air completely, as otherwise the fumes will move into the apartment.

If the fire doesn't burn....

Meistens it has one of the following causes:

  • Is the supply and return air really open?
  • The initial heat from the newsprint and the small pieces of wood was too short or too small. In this case, tear again some newsprint paper/cardboard, loosely crumble and carefully put it between the wood.
  • The large pieces of wood get too little heat, are too close together or too far apart. In this case, let the fire burn out and reposition the stack. Distribute a few small, easily combustible pieces of wood underneath/between the large pieces of wood.
  • Because the wood is already warm in the first attempt and is now more easily outgassed, the second attempt is usually more successful.
  • Use under no circumstances accelerants such as alcohol, petrol or similar!!

Distribute warm air in the house (ventilation ducts)

The two basic ovens in the kitchen (EC) are connected to the rooms on the upper floor via ventilation ducts.

basic oven at the dishwasher:

  • About the stove there are 4 rotary switches. Set the respective switches to OPEN to direct the warm air into the rooms Staufen, Hirschsprung and Katzental.
  • Additionally in the respective rooms the corresponding ventilation grille must be opened.

Base furnace between the two herds:

  • In the TV room there are 2 rotary switches. Set the respective switches to OPEN to direct the warm air into the rooms Blauen and Freiburg.
  • In the living room there is 1 rotary switch. Set the switch to OPEN to direct the warm air into the room Kandel.
  • Additionally, in the respective rooms the corresponding ventilation grille must be opened.

heating fireplace in the barn:

  • In order to get the heat from the oven to the room air more quickly, you can switch on the furnace fan with the switch to the right of the oven.

Operation of the night storage heater

Overview

The rooms in Freiburg, Hirschsprung and the barn have night storage stoves. The current for these heaters is switched on or off via a main switch. Night storage heaters are charged with electricity at night and do not release the heat until the next day.

In some bedrooms and bathrooms there are electric heaters on the wall. These are connected to the normal power supply. They heat immediately after being switched on. A list of all heaters can be found below.

please note

  • Night storage heaters are heated with electricity at night, regulated or switched off accordingly on the evening before.
  • Charging level 1 (max. 33% charge) on the radiator is usually sufficient.
  • Only use the room thermostat on the radiator or wall (barn) to switch on the blower when heat is required quickly

Hauptschalter
  • Switch on all night storage heaters for the cottage via Fritz! socket at the electric distributor right after the main entrance door on arrival
  • Switch off again on departure and set the individual night storage heaters to level I.

operation of the individual night storage heaters

  • The amount of heat to be stored in the ovens during the night is regulated by the charge controller depending on the outdoor temperature. In addition, you can control the capacity/charge quantity in three stages at the storage heaters themselves (3= full charge according to the charge control). Set level 3 (100%) if you want it to be warm/very warm in a room or level 1 (33%) if you prefer it cooler.
  • Set the radiator fans off via the room thermostats on the wall (barn) or on the respective radiator (room Freiburg and room Hirschssprung). This means that the heat is stored in the radiator for longer periods of time. Normally, the radiated heat is sufficient to heat the rooms. Turn on the fans if you need to get warmth quickly from the radiator. Set the fans to 0 if the room is warm enough or you leave the house. As a result, the residual heat remains stored for longer and there is less need to reload at night.
  • The night storage heaters are heated at night with electricity and release the stored heat to the rooms the next day. If you want to heat less, so you have to reduce the charge the night before.

On departure

  • Set the individual night storage heaters in the rooms on the radiator to level I.
  • Switch off the fans via the room thermostats on the wall or radiator.
  • Switch off the entire night storage heating for the holiday home centrally via Fritz! socket at the electric distributor to the main entrance door switch off.
